Assam Downtown University, a multidisciplinary university, commenced its establishment in the academic year of 2010 and the university's inception took place with the help of Downtown Charity Trust. The main objective of establishing the university was to provide students of the North Eastern Region of India with quality education at an affordable cost. Assam Downtown University is situated at Panikhaiti, Chandrapur in Guwahati, Assam. The university's campus is 12 km away from Dispur, which is Assam's capital state. The university has been approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi, and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
