Andhra University is the oldest institution of our country. This university is the first one to become the teaching cum affiliating university and as a residential university as well. The university is mainly concerned to teaching and research to only post- graduate.
People of the state have an untold and emotional connection with this institution because this University came into existence after a lot of struggle of the people. This University was much desired to remove the educational backwardness in the Madras Presidency.
Andhra University was established in the year 1926. This University was developed by the Madras Act of 1926. This university was developed by Sir C.R. Reddy. This university is 86 year old and is a fortune for the people and state.
Our former president of India Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishan was the Vice Chancellor of University. On 1st July, 1931 the university college of arts was launched. The courses taught were as follows:

After a year the university also inaugurated the College of Science and Technology, this college included courses like chemistry and physics. Later the university inaugurated many new courses in different field of Engineering, Science, Management and Arts.
The university always promoted excellence in higher education and for this it included many of the renowned educationists like Dr. V.K.R.V. Rao, Dr. T.R. Seshadri, Professor Humayan Kabir, Dr. S. Bhagavantham and Professor Hiren Mukherjee. These educationists had set up the standards for research and teaching.
Padmavibhushan Prof. C.R Rao who was one of the renowned statistician of this world was the product of Andhra University and Nobel Lariat C V Raman who has been laying up standards in Physics has been an alumni of Andhra University.
The university has been offering many new courses which are significant for maintaining a pace with the global challenges and needs of the society. To solve all the educational needs and sociological problems of the state, student are setting up high standards in field of higher education.
The University has always self evaluated itself continuously to set out the targets high and to maintain the high standards. In April 2002 the university is accreditation by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council). The university is awarded and assessed with grade A among all the state universities which are present in Andhra Pradesh. This is the first general university in the country which got the ISO 9001:2000 Certification in 2006. This was the first university to implement the quality management system.

The biggest constituent of Andhra Pradesh University as a college is their College of Arts and Commerce, this college has 26 departments which offers four of the diploma courses and 42 other courses. College of Science and Technology includes 63 courses which are under those 21 departments. Undergraduate programs are offered by 15 departments of the college of engineering. UGC has identified the college of law.
