Petroleum engineering is concerned with the production of hydrocarbons like crude oil and natural gas. Exploration and production of the same come from the oil and gas sector. A petroleum engineer along with the geologist have the highest impact on the field economics. They check which reservoir is developed and which one is depleted.
Certain assignments for the petroleum engineer involve working with geologists, production, reservoir, and commercial managers to interpret logging results with production prediction potential. There are many such tasks which are handled by the petroleum engineer.
It is one of the highest paid engineering disciples
It is further divided into 3 sub-branches namely, Reservoir engineers, drilling engineers and production engineers.
This stream offers a lot of career options for those interested in studying the extraction procedure of oil and gas. One of the main important opportunities for a petroleum engineer is achieved by working in a recognized refinery.
Following is the list of activity performed by Petroleum engineer:
There are 2 important specializations in Petroleum Engineering:
Upstream Engineering - This is concerned with the initial step of identifying oil and gas exploration points.
Downstream Engineering- This other specialization deals with practical aspects of processing techniques relating to petroleum refinery and natural gas, inclusive of concepts like Budgeting, cost and time estimation.
The sub-branches are as follows:
Eligibility:
Candidates must pass the higher secondary examination (12th) with science stream from a recognized educational board in order to take admission in the bachelor program.
Minimum educational prescribed for admission to the master course is bachelor degree in relevant field.
Admission Criteria -:
Interested students can apply for the bachelor degree in petroleum engineering through various entrance test. Admission process always varies for every college/institution.
Alternately, Candidates can take JEE Main Exam organized for admission to the B.Tech programmed in various premier colleges like IIT's, NIT.
For the graduate students, the entrance exam for various national, state and University level need to taken. One of the major exam Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is must for taking admission in IIT's and NIT.
Year wise Fees Bifurcation
Petroleum engineering has a lot of scope. A petroleum engineering students can attain various roles in an organization.
Some of the roles that a candidate can pursue after a qualification in this stream are:
The average salary range for a beginner would be 4-5 L while it may range up to 50 L and above for experienced staff.
