In the meantime, CBSE is thinking of implementing two levels of tests for social science and science in Classes 9 and 10: Standard and Advanced. This would be similar to the two-tier system now in place for mathematics in Class 10. While the Standard level will concentrate on fundamental understanding, the Advanced level aims to develop critical thinking skills and go deeper into concepts.

CBSE to Introduce Advanced-Level Textbooks

While certain subjects will be designated for in-depth study at the Advanced level, the syllabus will maintain a common core curriculum. For the 2026 - 2027 academic year, new science, social science and math textbooks with more challenging problems will be available, according to officials from the CBSE and the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).
