The IIT Madras surpassed Director Prof. V Kamakoti's "One Patent A Day" goal by filing 417 patents in the 2024–25 financial year, 298 of which were Indian and 119 of which were international. With 39 designs, 6 copyrights, and 1 trademark included, there were 463 Intellectual Property (IP) fields in all.
In the last 5 years, the institute has also signed more than 50 technology licensing agreements totaling ₹28 crore, which provided cutting-edge technologies to startups, MSMEs, and MNCs. One of these agreements is the significant 5G RAN agreement with Tejas Networks.
World Intellectual Property Day (April 26), which emphasizes how IP rights promote innovation and financial gains, falls on the same day as the filing surge.
IIT Madras has filed IPs in fields including robotics, AI, healthcare, energy, and microfluidics. With the help of a well-organized IPM Cell under the Dean (ICSR), it remains the top academic institution in India for both technology transfer and patent filing.
The TTO has successfully licensed over 30 IP and patents with a variety of businesses in 2024–2025, including Tunga Aerospace, OEG, AspenTech, Ciena, Rural-Mandi, InsituMicron, Greenvironment, Thryv, and others. More PCT and international patent filings have led to an increase in TTO licensing.
As we move closer to Viksit Bharat in 2047, protecting our IP is essential if we want India to remain a technological superpower. IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti expressed his pride in the team's 417 patent filings during the 2024–25 financial year, which marked an important rise in the number of international patents.
