The IMU CET eligibility criteria states the basic requirements that the applicants must fulfill to sit for the IMU CET exam. The criteria incorporates age limit, nationality, minimum marks required in the qualifying exam, etc., and this varies from course to course. While some courses do not demand any age limit, there are also courses that demand a minimum age limit. For UG course that candidates must have completed their 10+2 standard from a recognized university with at least 50% marks, and for PG course they must have passed their graduation course.

Only those candidates who fulfill the eligibility criteria for IMU CET will be eligible to go through the admission process. In case it is found that the applicant has presented false details their candidature will be cancelled on immediate basis and they will no longer be able to participate in any further process. Who is eligible to apply for IMU CET exam?

Is there any age limit to apply for the IMU CET?

As such there is no age limit to apply for the exam, but for some courses, the Indian Maritime University does specify the maximum age limit criteria. Candidates are advised to check this criteria for the different courses and categories tabulated below.

For the under graduate courses the candidates must be 17 years old as of 1st August 2025. The maximum age limit for males and females for different categories has been tabulated below.

Criteria

  • Maximum age: The reference date for the calculation of the age will be 01.08.2025
  • For Males: General-25 years, OBC (NCL) - 28 years, SC/ST-30 years
  • For Female: General-27 years, OBC (NCL) - 30 years, SC/ST-32 years

Relaxation

For SC/ST candidates: There will be a 5% relaxation in eligibility marks of PCM; however, it will not apply to English Marks. A relaxation of 5% in English marks will apply to candidates who are natives of the Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands and belong to their Scheduled Tribes and who & both of whose parents were born in those islands & belong to the Scheduled Tribes of those islands

Candidates seeking admission to this Marine Engineering Programme must be medically fit including eyesight and hearing as prescribed in the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000, as amended

Eyesight

  • There shall be no evidence of any morbid condition of either eye or of the lids of either eye which may be liable to risk of aggravation or recurrence
  • Candidates must possess good binocular vision (Fusion faculty and full field of vision in both eyes). Movement of the eyeballs must be full in all directions and the pupils should react normally to light and accommodation
  • Normal colour vision shall be tested by Ishihara Test Chart. Distance Vision unaided 0.5*(6/12) in each eye or 0.67*(6/9) in the better eye and 0.33 (6/18) in the other eye

At the time of admission, candidates will be required to produce a certificate of medical fitness issued by doctors approved by the Directorate General of Shipping

Note: Transgender are eligible for the B.Tech. (Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering) & B.Tech. (Naval Architecture and Ship Building) and they should meet the requisite eligibility criteria.

BE/BTech in Marine Engineering/Mechanical Engineering/Naval Architecture with at least 55% in aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Associate Member of Institution of Engineers Part A and B in Mechanical Engineering with at least 55% marks (by examination).

MEO Class I Certificate of Competency Issued by Govt. of India

Note: Candidates with GATE Scores in Marine Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering/ Naval Architecture are exempted from IMU’s CET, however, they will be considered only against the residuary seats, if any.

IMU CET Eligibility Criteria for Research Programmes

We have shared below the IMU Eligibility Criteria for Research Programs for the reference of the aspirants:

For PHD

  • Category I

Candidates who have passed SSLC (10th or 11th class/grade and PUC or higher secondary (12th grade) before joining undergraduate (UG) program (3 or more years) and UG before joining PG degree program, i.e. 10+2+UG Degree (3 or more years) or 11+1+ UG Degree (3 or more years)

And

The Post Graduate (P.G) shall be in the respective areas of research in the Schools of Marine Engineering / Nautical Studies / Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering / Maritime Management or a relevant discipline with at least 55% marks or equivalent Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). For SC/ ST/ OBC(NCL)/ PwD candidates, the minimum marks shall be 50% (or equivalent CGPA).

  • Category II

Candidates with M.S (by Research) or M.Phil degree in the respective areas of research in the Schools of Marine Engineering / Nautical Studies / Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering / Maritime Management or a relevant discipline.

  • Category III

Mariners with Master or MEO Class I Certificate of Competency or PGDMOM qualification with 2 years of continuous teaching experience at degree level as faculty in IMU / IMU Affiliated Institutes/DG(S) approved institutes. This category (Cat – III/) can apply only till the year 2023-24 for Ph.D.

For M.S. (By Research) / Integrated Ph.D

  • Category I

Candidates with Undergraduate degree with 10+2+(3 or 4) pattern in a relevant discipline with at least 55% marks or equivalent Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)

  • Category II

Mariners with a Master or MEO Class I Certificate of Competency. For SC/ST/OBC(NCL)/PwD candidates, the minimum marks shall be 50% (or equivalent CGPA).

What is the qualification for IMU CET?

Can 12th appearing apply for IMU CET?

Does IMU CET have negative marking?

The marking scheme of IMU CET 2025 for UG and PG programmes will be given below: The question paper of IMU CET 2025 exam for UG programme will consist of total 200 marks. +1 mark will be awarded for every correct answer. There will be a negative marking of 0.25 for every wrong answer.
