Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam University also shortened as AKTU is the conducting body of UPSEE and it also releases the eligibility criteria that each student must qualify in order to take UPSEE. The eligibility criteria usually remain the same, but it will still be released by the university along with the official notification of the examination. Candidates must ensure that they fulfill the minimum educational qualification defined by the university before filling the application form. There are various parameters based on which a candidate is considered eligible to take the exam and these criteria include age limit, nationality, qualifying exam, qualifying marks, etc. Along with these criteria, the candidates are shortlisted based on the marks obtained by them in UPSEE Exam conducted by the university.
UPSEE is a pen-paper based test which is conducted for admission to B. Tech courses in several engineering institutes affiliated to AKTU. The exam is conducted annually. The application procedure of the exam is expected to start in the month of January 2021.
The basic eligibility to be eligible to take the examination is to pass 12th class with relevant subjects from a recognized board. Following are the highlights of UPSEE Eligibility defined by the university:
- Candidates applying for the exam must have secured at least 45% marks in aggregate in three main subjects from a recognized board.
- Candidates belonging to reserved categories must secure at least 40% marks in aggregate.
- Both vertical and horizontal provisions of reservation of seats are considered.
- Candidates who possess a 3 years Diploma in Architecture from an institute recognized by Central or State Government are also eligible to apply for B. Arch.

Candidates applying for UPSEE 2021 must have studied certain subjects in order to take the exam. The combination of these subjects depends on the course they are willing to apply in. Following are the subject combinations required to apply for each course offered by the institutes of AKTU:

Diploma holders can apply for UPSEE to get admission in second year of these courses. They are just required to fulfill the eligibility criteria for lateral entry admission provision. The criteria that students must fulfill for admission to lateral entry in second year of B. Tech course are as following:
UPSEE 2021 Eligibility for Lateral Entry
Note* Lateral Entry admission to B. Arch program is not allowed.
- Candidates must have passed 3 years Engineering Diploma from an institute of Uttar Pradesh securing at least 45% marks in aggregate (40% for SC/ST).
- Along with having done 3 years diploma in engineering from an institute recognized by the Board of Technical Education, Uttar Pradesh, either of the parents of students must possess a domicile of Uttar Pradesh.
- Candidates with Diploma in any branch of engineering except Agricultural Engineering, Pharmacy, and Architecture can apply for the exam.
- Candidates who have passed three years B. Sc degree from any recognized university must have secured at least 45% marks in aggregate and qualified 12th class with Mathematics as one of the main subjects.
Agricultural Engineering Lateral Entry Admission Criteria
- Candidates must have done three years Diploma in the field of Agricultural Engineering from an institute of Uttar Pradesh are eligible to apply for lateral entry admission in agricultural engineering.
- Candidates must have secured at least 45% marks in aggregate (40% marks for reserved categories).
- Parents must possess a domicile of Uttar Pradesh.
B. Pharma Lateral Entry Admission Criteria
- Candidates must have done B. Sc in Pharmacy with Mathematics as one of the main subjects in 12th class.
MCA Lateral Entry Admission Criteria
- Candidates must possess a bachelor's degree of at least three years of duration in BCA/B. Sc (IT/Computer Application).
- Candidates must have secured at least 50% marks in aggregate (45% marks for reserved categories).
Note* There is no provision for lateral entry admission to some courses namely B. Arch, BHMCT, BFAD, BFA, and MBA.
UPSEE 2021 Eligibility for NRI Candidates
There is a provision by which NRI candidates can become eligible to apply for admission to the first year of programs offered by the institutes affiliated to AKTU. There are 5% seats reserved for NRIs and two ways by which the candidates are considered eligible to take the exam.
Note* NRI candidates applying for B. Arch would be required to qualify an Aptitude Test given on the day of counseling.
- Candidates must have passed the qualifying examination which would be considered equivalent to 12th class examination by the Association of Indian Universities. They must have studies Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
- Candidates who have passed High School Certificate Education (GCE) examination with subjects Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics from London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka are also eligible to apply for the examination.
- Candidates who have taken SAT II examination with Mathematics of level II C, Physics, and Chemistry as main subjects are also eligible to apply for the exam. The students will be shortlisted based on their score in SAT II exam.
- If there are still seats left after the students being shortlisted, the remaining seats will be filled up by students who are son/daughter/brother/sister of NRIs. They must have passed 12th class with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as main subjects. Such candidates must have secured at least 50% marks in aggregate in the above-mentioned subjects.
- The merit list is prepared based on candidates' marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics and these students are not required to appear in UPSEE 2020 examination.
