Two years of the other shoe to drop.

Placement: The Department has a lot of research labs. But only the research students are only allowed to enter them without restrictions. There is a higher expectation of outcomes from minimal amount of inputs. The basic problem is lack of infrastructure for the PG students both M. Tech and M. Sc. There is no such lab as a project lab for the M. Tech and M. Sc students. Most of the students do not get internships and are reliant on the department for their PG project topics. The amount of projects bagged is also on a downward trajectory. The previous funding agencies are abandoning the department day by day. Most predict that the department will be a shell of its former self in the coming years. Even though the faculty are well known and technically accomplished in their domains, there is a general lack of co-operation among them. The course is highly outdated and the students are rarely challenged by the curriculum. They are not inspired and motivated to learn. Most of the M. Sc students will not be able to get any technical jobs. The department completely ignore them when it comes to placement. They are not given any guidance. Mostly, three or four out of the twenty five that join the course gets any internships/placement at all. The Professors must try to get involved with industry MoU. Once upon a time where there were GE and AMD involvement, there is none today. They mostly blame the students for their lack of performance (like always). They should be willing to spend money on placements. Without their involvement there would not be any progress for the students.
Faculty: Right now most of the senior faculty are retired. Some of them are emeritus professors but they are not available 24/7. New faculty has joined the department; their profiles are good, rather exceptional. Whether they are able to transfer their knowledge is a different matter altogether. Right now the number of Professors is less; all the others are Assistant Professors (some with PhD).
College: The University of Cochin instituted the Department of Electronics in the year 1975. The Department was envisaged as a postgraduate Department with Master’s Degree and Doctoral programmes in frontier fields of Electronics. Realising the growing needs of trained man-power in various fields of Electronics, the University decided to start teaching programmes in the Department which was formally approved by the University Grants Commission and All India Council for Technical Education. in due course. Initially, an M.Tech. course was started with a student strength of 6, which was subsequently raised to 25 with 5 seats reserved for students sponsored by industries and R&D institutions.
Exam: State / National Entrance Exams
