IIT Roorkee is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India contributing to technological education and applied research. The Indian Institute of Technology was established in the year 1847. It has been awarded with accreditation by NAAC and also approved by AICTE and UGC. It is located in Roorkee, Uttrakhand. The NIRF 2023 has ranked the institute at 5th position under the engineering category.
The Institute offers graduate courses in 10 disciplines, postgraduate courses in 55 disciplines, and Doctoral Programs in all the departments. IIT Roorkee has around 22 academic departments in all streams like Engineering, Applied Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Management programs. The institute also emphasizes scientific and technological education and research. IIT Roorkee History: IIT Roorkee is India’s oldest engineering college, which was converted into the league of the IITs in the year 2001. It was set up as the College of Civil Engineering in British India back in 1847 by James Thompson the Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Province. Interestingly, the primary reason for the establishment was to train officers and surveyors who were engaged in constructing the Ganges Canal. IIT Roorkee was renamed in 1854 after the demise of Thomason’s death and the completion of the canal the college was given the name of Thomason College of Civil Engineering by Proby Cautley, who was the designer and projector of the canal. It further changed its name to the University of Roorkee in 1949, and it was finally given the name IIT Roorkee in the year 2001.

IIT Roorkee Courses
The IIT Roorkee Courses have undergone a lot of changes. The Electrical Engineering department was added to the college only in the year 1897 and the master’s courses in architecture or the (M. Arch.) were instituted only in 1969–70. Some years later in the year 1978, the IIT Roorkee which was then called the University of Roorkee was merged with the Institute of Paper Technology.
IIT Roorkee Courses are divided into three types-

3. Integrated Courses
The courses offered by IIT Roorkee are provided through 21 academic departments.
IIT Roorkee Institute accepts students into BTech, BArch and integrated MSc integrated MTech courses based on their JEE scores. Earlier when IIT Roorkee was not part of IIT the students had to go through the Roorkee Entrance Exam (REE) to get admission into the institute. The selection rate for the exam was close to 0.25%, hence it was considered the second hardest exam after IIT-JEE. GATE scores are used for Admission to PG programs in engineering and architecture in addition to a written test and interview. For PG programs in fundamental sciences, IIT JAM score is considered. For admission into the MBA, the CAT scores are considered for admission along with interviews.
Along with the engineering courses, the Indian Institute of Technology also offers a two-year residential MBA program for which the admissions, starting in 2011, will be done based on the Common Admission Test, thus replacing the Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) previously conducted by the IITs. The institute also offered an interdisciplinary program in computer applications leading to a degree in Master of Computer Applications (MCA). The standalone MCA course has been removed from the courses.

IIT Roorkee Admissions
IIT Roorkee Admission to various courses is primarily determined by entrance exams. The JEE Advance exam for admission in B.Tech courses. For admission to the Architecture course, the students have to submit the NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture)scores. The admissions in the M.Tech courses of the IIT Roorkee are based on the scores gained by the students in the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering)exam. Admission to the Postgraduate programs in fundamental sciences is made based on IIT-JAM, and admissions to MBA are made through the CAT exam. IIT Roorkee currently has 23 academic departments that together offer more than 65 courses leading to undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees. Along with a few integrated and dual degree courses in the fields of Engineering, Science, Architecture, Management, and Social Sciences. Two new postgraduate programmes (PGP) have just been launched at IIT Roorkee, namely the Masters in Design (Industrial Design) and the Masters in Innovation Management. In addition, IITR has begun two online certificate programmes in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

IIT Roorkee Admission Procedure
- Students need to enrol in the respective entrance exams JEE Main and JEE Advanced for Btech. And GATE for Post Graduate.
- Students then need to check for ranks and scores after the results are declared.
- For securing admission into an IIT like IIT Roorkee, a student needs to secure an AIR i.e. All India Rank.
- Then students have to enroll for any further process say the Joint Seat Allocation process (JoSAA) counselling for Btech.

IIT Roorkee Placements 2024: The 2024 Phase 1 has been completed. Databricks, a US-based software startup, offered a student over ₹2.05 crore as the Highest Package for an international role. According to media sources, students received 802 offers from 172 recruiters during the first 15 days. Till now, IIT Roorkee has received 23 international offers. Accenture Japan, American Express, Google, Microsoft, Qualcomm India, and other prominent recruiters participated in the placements.

IIT Roorkee Hostel
Every hostel at IIT Roorkee has a cutting-edge Cyber Cafe which is run by the students themselves. All hostels are fully WiFi-linked. The IIT Roorkee hostels are called Bhawans and each bhawans hosts its separate canteen. And all of this takes place in the world’s serene, beautiful, unparalleled surroundings.
At IIT Roorkee hostel is where the majority of students reside, and where extracurricular activities are in sync with the academic schedule. There are around 16 hostels on campus, and two of them Sarojini and Kasturba are for female students. Vigyan Kunj, a brand-new coed hostel, is on campus. Students from Undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students can be accommodated in hostels. After the first year, all the hostel students are assigned dorms by the college administration.
There are 9 hostels for married students, doctoral students, and international students at the IIT Roorkee hostel network. There is also provision for the mess administration which consists of a staff advisor, a chief advisor, and a student mess secretary in the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.
IIT Roorkee Sports
Since the Institute’s foundation, playing games and participating in sports have played a significant role in physical recreation. Today, the Institute recognizes proficiency in 14 games and offers some of the greatest facilities for a variety of sports and activities.
IIT Roorkee Library
The IIT Roorkee Library is one of the oldest libraries in India, it hosts various books and journals that are old and very valuable. The name of the library at IIT Roorkee is Mahatma Gandhi Central Library.
Faculty, students, and employees from IITR are legitimate Library members. One must show documentation of the enrollment number at the library circulation desk to have the membership activated as per the schedule (for students only).
IIT Roorkee Fest
Thomso is the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee’s yearly cultural festival. The 1982-founded festival lasts for three days in the months of October and November. The 2018 edition of the IIT Roorkee Fest featured more than 150 events and welcomed more than 9000 guest students from 200 colleges across India. In addition, more than 12,000 students are from the hosting institution, i.e. IIT Roorkee.
Governance
The IITs in India follow a certain pattern of governance. And IIT Roorkee also has a similar structure. The president stands at the top position as per the provision of the Constitution of India. It is followed by the IIT Council. The board of governors is 3rd in the structure. Under the board of governors is the director who is the chief academic and executive officer of the IIT. Under the director, in the organizational structure, comes the deputy director. Under the director and the deputy director, are the deans, heads of departments, and registrar.
IIT Roorkee Campus Life & Events
The campus life at IIT Roorkee is a wonderful blend of fun and learning. IIT Roorkee has a more than 160-year history of learning, and with catchphrases like "Land of Lions," it's a fun place to be. A typical day at IIT Roorkee begins with students attending lectures and completing examinations. However, the most exciting aspect of IITR life is the weekend. Students can go rafting in the Ganges, take long bike journeys across the Himalayas, and so on.
IIT Roorkee Infrastructure
The Institute has three campuses: a 365-acre site in Roorkee, a 25-acre campus in Saharanpur, and a 10-acre facility for the Greater Noida Extension Centre in Greater Noida. IIT Roorkee includes about 8,000 students, dormitories, clubs, sports facilities, and guest homes, including ten boys' hostels, three girls' hostels, one coed hostel, and six married couple hostels. The institute has UG, PG, and Alaknanda clubs, as well as other student facilities.
