IIT Madras (IITM) Highlights
The German government collaborated with India to establish IIT Madras (IITM) in Chennai (formerly Madras) in 1959. This institute ranks 3rd among India's 23 IITs and is recognized as an Institute of National Importance. IIT Madras boasts a sprawling 630-acre campus, once part of the Guindy National Park.
NIRF has ranked 1st in India for engineering in 2023. IITM houses over 550 faculty, 8,000 students, and 1,250 staff. The institute fosters international collaboration through MoUs with foreign universities. UG, PG, and Dual Degree students can gain global exposure through semester-abroad programs.
Additionally, IIT Madras offers Joint Doctoral Programs (JDPs) with 17 universities and an AICTE-sponsored quality improvement program.
IITM has 16 departments, 14 research centers, and a Continuing Education Programs Centre (CEP). These departments offer over 121 UG, PG, and Doctoral courses in Engineering, Science, Humanities, and Management.
IIT Madras accepts the JEE Advanced exam for B.Tech Admissions. The required cutoff rank for the B.Tech falls between 85 to 4000. The IIT Madras fee for the B.Tech program is Rs. 2.05 Lacs.
Further, Phase 1 of the IIT Madras Placements in 2024 has concluded with 55% placements. The Median Package during the placements stood at Rs. 19 LPA. IITM reports that internships and PG job offers increased by 19% from the Core sector.
In 2023, the institute received 1612 offers with the highest package of Rs. 1.31 Crores. Around 80% of students placed out of the total registered students. Top recruiting companies such as Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, and McKinsey & Company took part in the placement drive.

IIT Madras Course Admissions is highly competitive and desirable for aspirants. They are primarily based on entrance examinations that include JEE Advanced/JEE Main, GATE, and IIT JAM for admission into various programs at UG, PG, and Doctoral Levels. Entrance exams are needed for B.Tech, M.Tech, MSc, and BSc Courses. IIT Madras Admission to UG, PG, and Doctoral level courses requires certain eligibility. Candidates eligible for JEE Advanced can get admission to the B.Tech, B.Tech+M.Tech (Dual Degree), and Integrated programs.
- Candidates need to clear the GATE exam to be eligible for admission to M.Tech, MA, MS (by Research), and Ph.D. programs.
- The IITM M.Sc course requires an IIT JAM score. MBA and EMBA course candidates must qualify for the CAT exam with a valid cutoff score.

Institute Merit-cum-Means Scholarship: This scholarship is given to those students whose parents’ income is less than 4,50,000 per annum. The benefit of this scholarship is an exemption of 67% of the tuition fee.
Institute National Prize: This scholarship is given to students based on JEE rank and whose parents’ income is less than 4,50,000 per annum. The benefit of this scholarship is a one-time grant of Rs. 1000.
Indian Women’s Association at Bonn Scholarship: This scholarship is given to students based on JEE rank and whose parents’ income is less than 5 lakhs per annum. One B.Tech student will be given Rs. 1250 per month for 12 months only.
