Here is a brief description of the various courses offered by IIM Sambalpur:

IIM Sambalpur MBA programme structure and courses

The first year of an MBA, which consists of three terms, typically begins in June/July and ends in March of the following year. Participants go on summer internships for 8-10 weeks at the end of the third term (tentatively, April 1st week to June 1st week). The second-year classes run from the last week of June to the last week of February the following year, with the Convocation taking place at the end of March.

The MBA Program’s courses are organised around the concept of credits. Each credit equals 10 hours of contact time. Participants should be aware that 10 hours of class instruction entails at least 25-30 hours of preparation in the form of self-study and peer-group study, implying that at least 40 hours are required for a 1-credit course.

To facilitate effective learning, instructors use a variety of pedagogical tools such as lecture-discussions, case studies, problem-solving exercises, psychometric tests, behavioural and computer-based simulations, projects, class presentations, and various forms of technology-based learning such as multi-media and e-learning. Self and group studies are prioritised over lecture-based studies.

IIM Sambalpur Ph.D. programme structure and courses

The PhD programme will be a full-time residential programme. The student is expected to finish the programme in four years, with a maximum of two years of course work. Waivers may be granted to eligible candidates at the discretion of the Competent Authority. The student may be granted an extension in exceptional circumstances. In any case, the programme should be completed within six years.

The PhD Program is divided into two stages:

1. Classwork

The following components make up the course work:

• Core Courses in General
• Domain-Specific Training
• Independent Study Program (CIS)

The academic requirements for completing this component are the same as those for the MBA Program. At the end of the second year, a Comprehensive Examination will be held to determine whether the student has achieved a satisfactory level of comprehension and application of the concepts learned in his/her field of specialisation. The Comprehensive Examination will include both written and viva questions.

2. Thesis Project

The thesis is the document that serves as a major component in meeting the requirements for receiving a PhD. The thesis work is divided into the following stages:

• Submission and Evaluation of the Thesis
• Defense of Pre-thesis Submission
