IIM Ahmedabad Admission is a 2-step Selection Procedure:
Step 1: Qualifying CAT
Step 2: Academic Writing Test (AWT) and Personal Interview (PI)
The above-mentioned selection procedure includes qualifying CAT in the first step, followed by an interview. The candidates qualifying for the CAT with the minimum required percentile are only eligible for the next and final round. Based on their academic profiles and qualifying marks, the candidates are awarded application ratings or scores.
Evaluating the AR helps shortlist the candidates for the next round. In the final selection, candidates will have to appear for the Academic Writing Test (AWT) and a Personal interview. The seats are allotted to the candidates performing exceptionally well in all the above-mentioned rounds.
Candidates aspiring to take admissions in IIM need to understand that qualifying for CAT 2024 is important, but that alone will not guarantee a seat in the desired course. The candidate’s overall performance plays a key role in admission.
Last year, a trend was observed: a candidate with a percentile of 82 was enrolled, whereas the student with a 99 percentile failed to impress the selection committee. The Percentile of CAT 2024 is a qualifier for admission and ensures an Application Rating. The higher the percentile, the higher the Application Rating.
Other than CAT scores, candidates are also evaluated based on the above-mentioned criteria:
- Marks obtained in Class 10: Candidates, irrespective of the board, will get a score of 10 if the particular candidate has scored more than 90 per cent in the qualifying exam.
- Marks obtained in Class 12: Candidates qualified with 90% and above from Science and Commerce will be awarded the highest ratings.
Marks Obtained in Graduation: Candidates are scored on a bachelor's basis of 7 categories as mentioned below :
Category Name | Stream in Bachelor’s Degree | Minimum percentage required for Top Rating |
Category 1 | Medicine | 70 percent and above |
Category 2 | CA, ICWA, CS degrees | 63 percent and above |
Category 3 and Category 5 | Economics, Finance, Commerce, Science, BBA, BCA, paramedical | 80 percent and above |
Category 6 | Arts, Humanities, Law, Journalism | 75 percent and above |
Category 4 and Category 7 | denoting Engineering, technology, and other bachelor's degrees | 85 percent and above |

Placement: Placements were excellent. IIM A has cluster system (with companies of same field arriving on same day), almost 40% of batch I guess had offers by the end of cluster 1 (I. e. Consulting & Finance firms), including PPOs and lateral offers. 100% of students got placed. The highest, the lowest and Average can’t be calculated since a number of companies don’t give salary details in the Job Description Forms. But the highest for domestic would definitely be more than or equal to 50 LPA. Around 100+ firms participated across Consulting, Finance, Marketing, General Management, Technology, and BFSI profiles. Consulting took maximum students, my guess would be ~ 100. 100% of students got internships as it is a mandatory requirement. Stipend details are not shared by companies, but the highest domestic will ~ 3.5 lacs. Yes, there is a placement cell. It is responsible for ensuring internships and placements for all interested students.

Faculty: Faculty is probably the best aspect of IIM A. They are well qualified and extremely knowledgeable. The fields of faculty members varies across Marketing, Finance, Public Policy, Economics, Information Systems. The teaching is completely case based and focuses on application of learned concepts. The scope of industry exposure is through internships or if someone wants to try their hands on a live project, there is a student body dedicated to pitching projects to be taken up by groups of students. Also, the incubation centre of IIM A is amongst the best in the country, if someone is interested in entrepreneurship.
