The establishment of Fergusson College took place in the year 1884. It is affiliated with Savitribai Phule Pune University and approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The second principal of the college was the famous Social reformer, journalist, thinker, and educationist Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, who served as its second principal from August 1892 till his death in June 1895. Fergusson College Pune Main Building
The majestic Fergusson College Pune main building, a masterpiece in itself, encapsulates the institution’s essence. Crafted in the Gothic architectural style using basalt stone, likely sourced from the Fergusson hill, this edifice was erected in the early 1890s.
The cornerstone of Fergusson College Pune was laid on 11th January 1892 by His Excellency, the Right Hon’ble George Robert Canning Harris, Baron Harris, G. C. I. E., the Governor of Bombay.
The brilliant design of Fergusson College Pune came from Rao Bahadur V. B. Kanitkar, the Honorary Consulting Engineer of the society, and it was realized at an expense of Rs. 87,500.00. The architectural marvel of Fergusson College Pune found its grand inauguration on 27th March 1895, graced by His Excellency, the Right Hon’ble Lord Sandhurst, the then Governor of Bombay.
This marked the dawn of a new era in higher education. The building of Fergusson College Pune comprises ground floor housing offices, classrooms, the College Office (Grant-in-aid/Accounts/Self-Finance), and the former Deccan Education Society office.
Additionally, Fergusson College Pune hosts a Common Room for Teachers, an Audio-Visual Hall, and a Language Laboratory. The first floor of Fergusson College Pune is home to the Sanskrit and History departments.
In 1985, the Government of India commemorated the Centenary of Fergusson College Pune with a postal stamp, bearing a portrait of the iconic Main Building of Fergusson College Pune created by the esteemed artist and Fergussonian, Shri Gopal Deuskar.

Fergusson College Pune Hostel
Fergusson College Pune Hostel facilities are available for both boys and girls. The Hostels are situated in the Fergusson College Pune Campus itself, which is around 65 acres in area. There are six hostels, which can accommodate 230 female and 441 male students. There is a separate "Rector Office" with specialized staff for general administration to oversee the daily/routine affairs of the Fergusson College Hostels.
A separate group, the "Hostel Management Committee," has also been established by the parent organization, the Deccan Education Society (DES), to oversee the activities in the hostel. Two honorary medical officers visit the hostels three times a week to provide the residents with medical advice. The hostels are routinely maintained by the DES Estate department.

- The Fergusson College is a result of the efforts of a pre-independence organization named the Deccan Education Society (DES) which was founded by prominent freedom fighters like Lokmanya Tilak, Vishnushastri Chiplunkar, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, Mahadeo Ballal Namjoshi, and Vaman Shivram Apte in 1884. It was considered a very brave move to start a privately managed college in India in that era, and with the tireless efforts of the leaders, Fergusson College came into existence on 2nd January 1885. It was named Fergusson College to appreciate the efforts of Sir James Fergusson in the establishment of the college.
