Top IITs in India 2024

The Indian Institutes of Technology are autonomous institutes, officially declared as the ‘Institutes of National Importance' since 1961. These institutes are the centrally funded technical institutes which are directly governed by the Ministry of Education of the Government of India under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. IIT Kharagpur was the first Indian Institute of National Importance to be established in the year 1951. 

There are total 23 IITs that offer around 16,000 seats across different specialisation. These are the best engineering colleges in India. IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Bombay have been some of the top ranked IITs in the country. The only gateway for admit in these colleges is to qualify JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams in succession.  

The Ministry of Human Resource Development announces NIRF Ranking every year to declare Top Colleges in the Country. There are several categories under which these colleges are ranked. The NIRF Full Form is “National Institutional Ranking Framework”. IIT Madras has secured the first position and IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay secured 2^nd and 3^rd positions respectively. These three institutes have been the Top 3 IITs in the country for the last three years.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework, also known as NIRF, was launched in the year 2015 for ranking higher learning institutes in India. IIT Madras has been on the top in the overall category since 2016.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras, (IIT Madras) was established in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. IIT Delhi

IIT Delhi was established in the academic year of 1961 at Hauz Khas. The institute was previously named as the College of Engineering and Technology but later in the year 1963, it was given the title of institute of national importance and hence was renamed to the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. 

The Institute has a beautiful campus in the heart of National Capital. It is surrounded by monuments such as Qutub Minar. The fun fact is that the girls’ and boys’ hostel of IIT Delhi have been named after the mountain ranges in India. IIT Delhi is ranked 2^nd Best IIT in India. IIT Bombay

IIT Bombay is located at Powai, Mumbai and is the second oldest IIT of India. IIT Bombay was established in the academic year 1958. The institute provides comprehensive graduate programs presenting doctoral degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The institute has 17 academic departments along with 13 multi-disciplinary centres and 3 schools of excellence. 75 out of the top 100 rank holders of JEE Advanced Exam prefer admission to IIT Bombay. IIT Bombay is also know for organizing the largest college festival amongst all the IITs.

IIT Kanpur

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur was established in the year 1959. The establishment of IIT Kanpur took place as a part of the Kanpur Indo American program which included the consortium of nine US Research Universities. The library at IIT Kanpur has a collection of more than 3 lakh books and journals and every year nearly 4500 books and journals are further added to the collection.

IIT Kanpur is a public research institute and involved in many social and public utility projects. The institute is also known to have tie-ups with top international institutes for research and academic initiatives. It also has world class laboratories and equipment for successfully conducting the research initiatives. IIT Kanpur also conducted JEE Advanced Exam in the year 2018.

IIT Roorkee

IIT Roorkee was established in the academic year of 1847 at Roorkee, Uttarakhand. The Indian Institute of Technology was previously known as the University of Roorkee and Thomason College of Engineering. The institute was established under the supervision of Lieutenant Governor Sir, Sir James Thomason. In 2011. the institute was declared the 7^th IIT in the country.

The institute consists of 21 academic departments and provides 11 undergraduate, 1 integrated dual degree, and 61 postgraduate and numerous doctoral programs.

IIT Kharagpur

IIT Kharagpur is the oldest Indian Institute of Technology, which was established in the year 1951 at Kharagpur, West Bengal. The institute has 19 academic departments along with eight multi-disciplinary centres, 13 schools of excellence and 25 central research units. The library at IIT Kharagpur is one of the biggest libraries of Indian with more than 3.5 lakh books, Documents, and Research Papers. The institute organized two festivals annually i.e. the Spring Fest and Kshitij Fest.

IIT Guwahati

IIT Guwahati was established in the year 1993 and is the sixth oldest IIT of India which is situated on the northern banks of river Brahmaputra. The institute has 11 academic departments and 10 research centres. Currently, there are 215 faculty members along with 300 support staff. The institute has rapidly progressed to be among the top 10 IITs of India.

IIT Hyderabad

IIT Hyderabad was established in the year 2008 at Sangareddy district of Telangana. The institute is famous for its academic strength, research and proximity to IT Hub. The Institute possesses 14 academic departments and provides Undergraduate courses in 9 disciplines and Post Graduate courses in 8 disciplines. The institutes offer 285 seats in B. IIT Indore was established in the year 2009 at Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The institute offers World Class research Programmes. The institute possesses three schools i.e., the School of Basic Sciences, School of Engineering and Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences.
