IIMs (Indian Institute of Management) are India's most prestigious management institute. What is CAT?
CAT stands for Common Admission Test. It is a national-level entrance examination for admission into the top management institutes in India for MBA or PGDM programs. Every year, one of the many IIMs is responsible for conducting the CAT Exam rotationally.
It is a computer-based online examination and the duration of the exam is 120 minutes. The exam is divided into three sections. These sections are:
- Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension.
- Quantitative Ability.
- Logical Reasoning.

Eligibility for CAT
To be eligible to appear for the CAT exam, candidates need to fulfill certain criteria. The important criteria for the exam are listed below:
- Candidates who have scored a minimum of 50% in the Class X and Class XII Board Exam from a recognized board, are eligible to apply.
- Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline, with a minimum of 50% for the General category, and 45% for the SC, ST, and PWD categories from a recognized college or university can apply for CAT.
- Also, candidates who are in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree, who have completed the final examinations and are waiting for the results can apply. Once they get selected, they need to present an equivalent proof from the college to the CAT conducting authority for further procedure, until they receive the official Bachelor’s degree from the college.
- The minimum cutoff score for the CAT needs to be cleared by the individual to be eligible to apply for the CAT exam.
- There is no age limit to apply for the exam.
- While it is not mandatory to have work experience, a lot of institutions prefer an individual with work experience.
