NHRC Internship: Duration, Eligibility, Application, Stipend, Rules And Regulations
The National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRC) was created on October 12, 1993. The statute under which it is created is the Protection of Human Rights Act (PHRA) of 1993, as amended by the Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Act of 2006. It is consistent with the Paris Principles, which were adopted at the first international workshop on national institutions for the promotion and protection of human rights in Paris in October 1991 and endorsed by the General Assembly of the United Nations through Regulations 48/134 on December 20, 1993. The National Human Rights Commission exemplifies India's commitment to promoting and protecting human rights.
Aside from the regular summer and winter internship programmes held in May-June and December-January each year, the NHRC also provides opportunities throughout the year, except during the months of May-June and December-January, for students from various streams, particularly law students, to have short-term ties with the Commission in batches for 15 days. During the internship, students learn about how the Commission's many divisions operate. They are also informed about the complaints process and other concerns that the Commission is addressing. Allowing them to interact with the complainants is a key aspect.
About The NHRC Internship: Summer Internship
The National Human Rights Commission is responsible for promoting Human Rights knowledge and understanding under Section 12(h) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. Since 1998 and 2000, the commission has held summer and winter internship programmes to raise awareness among university students about the need of protecting and promoting human rights.
NHRC Internship: Duration
- In 2024, the "Summer Internship Programme (SIP) 2024" will run for four weeks, from Monday, June 10 to Friday, July 5.
- Applications are invited from eligible students around the country.
NHRC Internship: Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility and selection criteria will be as follows:-
- Students who have finished 1st year and are pursuing 2nd or 3rd year LLB(3 year) courses.
- Students who have completed 3 years or Semester VI of a 5-year BA/BA LLB programme
- Students studying the L.L.M. course.
- Students pursuing a PG Diploma or MA in Human Rights, as well as PG students in Political Science, Sociology, Social Work (MSW), Criminology, Public Administration, Rural Development, History, Economics, Commerce, Anthropology, Mass Communication, International Relations, and other Social Sciences disciplines, will be given preference.
- Only students enrolled in regular courses at UGC Recognised Universities would be eligible.
- Students must achieve a minimum of 65% in Class XI and subsequent years of degree programmes.
- The applicant's age should not exceed 28 years as of May 1, 2024.
NHRC Internship: Document Required
Statement of Purpose (SOP): Applicants must submit a 250-word write-up on the topic 'Statement of Purpose (SoP) for joining NHRC Online Short Term Internship' together with the online application form, which will also be used as a basis of selection.
Marksheets: Enclose self-attested scanned copies of mark sheets from 12th grade onwards, as well as mark sheets for each year/semester currently enrolled in the course.
Recommendation Letter: A scanned recommendation letter/email from the HOD/Dean/Principal in the appended Proforma.
NHRC Internship: Application
The deadline for submitting the application is May 26, 2024. Send the application by Speed post, courier, or hand with the words "Application for SIP 2014" superscribed on the envelope. Please ensure that the SIP 2014 application is properly signed and sealed by the Head of Department (HOD). Applications submitted otherwise will not be considered.

Step 1: Visit the official website
Step 2: Click on the 'Apply Now' button below.
Step 3: On the right-hand side of the dashboard, click the 'Register' button and provide the essential information to register. (Note: If you've already registered, log in using your registered email address.)
Step 4: Find the 'Apply Online' button and click on it.
Step 5: Carefully read the instructions and then proceed.
Step 6: Fill in all of the essential information to 'Register'.
Step 7: After successfully registering, fill out the form and upload the relevant info to finish the application.

NHRC Internship: Application Rejection
- Applications may be denied if the following requirements are not met:
- Scanned attested mark sheets for 10 and 12 Standard, Graduation Course, and Pursuing Course.
- Statement of Purposes (SOPs) and a scanned recommendation letter/email from the HOD/Dean/Principal in the appended Proforma (Annexure I).
- Note that incomplete applications and those without attested copies of mark sheets (10 Class, 12 Class, all semesters of Graduation Course & pursuing Course), letters of recommendation, and SOPs will be rejected.
- Applications sent via email or post will not be considered. No applications will be accepted after the deadline.
NHRC Internship: Course Structure
Approximately 70-75 sessions on human rights subjects to sensitize the interns. The SIP 2024 will have the following inputs:
- Classroom sessions.
- Interaction with the Honorable Chairperson and Members of the NHRC
- Conduct research on human rights concerns.
- Book review
- Human rights films and talks on topics such as child labor, anti-trafficking, elder rights, health, and education.
- Field Visits: Interns will visit police stations and jails to observe and interact with personnel and get insight into correctional administration. Interns will visit non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to connect with children and learn about their challenges.
- Interns will visit the National Commission for Women, Minorities, Scheduled Castes, and Scheduled Tribes and interact with them.
NHRC Internship: Rules And Regulations
- Interns must register upon arrival.
- Participants must attend internships on a consistent basis.
- Their daily attendance will be recorded on a register/attendance sheet.
NHRC Internship: Facilities for Interns
- Interns will get a kit/bag comprising NHRC reading materials and a temporary intern identity card.
- Library services will be available.
- Internet access will be available.
- Interns will receive tea, snacks, and lunch every working day. Interns will get packed lunches on field visits.
NHRC Internship: Travel Allowance & Stipend
- Selected interns from outside Delhi will be provided with Sleeper AC 3 Tier train tickets to and from New Delhi, taking the quickest route possible.
- Interns who successfully finish the internship will get a stipend of Rs. 12,000/-.
- Interns are responsible for their own living arrangements and transportation to and from the Commission during their internship.
NHRC Internship: Award
- Candidates will be granted certificates of participation based on the following criteria:
- Attendance, punctuality, discipline, and participation in sessions are mandatory.
- Group project presentations, reports, and book reviews must be submitted on time.
- Interns who place first, second, and third in the Group Research Project will receive prize money of Rs.15,000/-, Rs.10,000/-, and Rs.5,000/-, respectively.
- The five interns with the highest Book Review marks will receive books worth up to Rs.1,000/- apiece.
- The top three interns in the Declamation Contest will be rewarded in the form of books priced no more than Rs.1000/- each.
NHRC Internship: Seat
A maximum of 80 students will be allowed to the Summer Internship Programme 2024. In addition, 5 students from Delhi and NCR may be kept on the WaitList. If an intern drops out of the internship, others on the Waitlist may be contacted to join the internship by no later than the second day of the Summer Internship Programme 2024.
