About: One well-known division of distance learning at the University of Mumbai is the Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL). Originally founded in 1971–72, it was the seventh institution in India to start a conventional remote learning initiative. From humanities, science and technology, commerce and management, and multidisciplinary studies, IDOL MU presents a wide spectrum of undergraduate, postgraduate, and diploma programs.

Except for the Master of Management Studies (MMS) and Master of Computer Applications (MCA), most MU IDOL programs provide admission based on marks gained on the last qualifying test; they are merit-based. Candidates for the MMS and MCA programs must show up for an admission exam run by corresponding departments.

The Directorate of Distance Education was elevated in 1993 to the "Institute of Distance Education," therefore conferring upon it the designation of a "University Institution." Students of IDOL Mumbai University have the chance to land jobs at prestigious companies and also gain from the scholarship programs the institute offers.
