MCH: Master of Chirurgiae 

MCH in medical stands for Master of Chirurgiae (Master of Surgery).The MCH full form is Magister Chirurgiae. It is a three year postgraduate course in surgery. It is a supers peciality degree in surgery. If a doctor wants to become a superspecialist in surgery, he/she has to complete MBBS, then MS degree and after that they can pursue MCH. Medical career is a noble profession. Different types of medical degree courses available in India and different types of doctor belong to different types of medical degree. MCH belongs to the medical profession and is a specialization course. MCH has different branches such as cardiology, vascular surgery, neurosurgery, pediatric neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and urology. Those doctors who choose cardiothoracic and vascular surgery branch under MCH also referred as Cardiac Surgeon.

M.Ch. is the super speciality course degree done after the MS degree. M.Ch. stands for Master of Chirurgiae, in Latin “Magister Chirurgiae” which means Master of Surgery.  M.Ch. is the super speciality degree given in plastic surgery, neurosurgery, surgical oncology, surgical gastroenterology, pediatric surgery, hand surgery etc.

Eligibility for MCH Course

In India, To pursue MCH course candidates must meet the eligibility criteria:

  • Candidates need to complete an MBBS degree. For MBBS, candidates have to prepare for NEET. To be eligible for NEET, candidates should have passed 10+2 in  science stream with physics, chemistry, and  biology. Candidates must have a strong hold on the English language. 
  • Aspirants should be registered with the Medical Council of India (MCI) or State Medical Council.
  • To be eligible for Master of Surgery (MS), MBBS graduates have to clear NEET-PG and INI-CET(Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test). 
  • If the candidate has completed MBBS and wants to pursue Masters, then there are two options-  after completion of MBBS degree, prepare for PG degree or do a job while pursuing MS. 

MCH Admission Process

The basis for admission in MCH course is Merit-Based and Entrance Based. For admission into MCH degree course of 3 years duration, students must clear NEET. Institutes like AIIMS and JIPMER conduct their own entrance exams. Candidates have to qualify the entrance exams and admission will be given based on the scores obtained in entrance exams. 

MCH Course Duration

The MCH course duration is three to five years depending on the previous degree program that students have pursued. If the candidate already has an MBBS, then MCH course can be for 5 years but if the candidate also has an MD, then MCH degree is for a 3-year duration.

The average course fees may range from INR 20,000/- to INR 50,000/- in government colleges and in private colleges the course fees are around INR 1,00,000/- to INR 1,50,000/-. MCH course fees may vary based on the University offering the course and also depending on the facilities and infrastructure offered by them.
