A Brief History of AIIMS in India

The AIIMS Delhi was founded in 1952. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act, 1956 established the first AIIMS in 1956. Chief Minister of West Bengal Bidhan Chandra Roy initially wanted it to be established in Calcutta, but after he refused, it was established in New Delhi. The act changed its name from All India Institute of Medical Sciences to AIIMS New Delhi, which was then known as AIIMS New Delhi.

The Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) initiative was announced by the Indian government in 2003. The initiative's goal was to "correct regional imbalances in the availability of affordable/reliable tertiary healthcare services". The project was intended to be accomplished through two main channels: the establishment of AIIMS-like institutions and the upgrading of government medical colleges. Although the announcement was made during the tenure of Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2003, the project was postponed due to the change in power at the center. The project was officially launched in March 2006, with the announcement of six AIIMS-like medical institutes.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Amendment) Bill, 2012 was introduced in the Lok Sabha on August 27, 2012, to replace the Ordinance that made the six institutes operational. The Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on August 30, 2012, and the Rajya Sabha on September 3, 2012, passing it on September 4, 2012. The Act was published on September 13, 2012. The Act also granted the institutes the INI status and empowered them to establish other AIIMS-like institutes through gazette notification.
