Culture and Student Life at IITs

All the IITs have on-campus residential facilities for the students, research scholars, and faculties. The students have to stay in halls or hostels during their stay in IIT. The students of all IITs need to choose one of the following in their first year: National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS) and National Sports Organization (NSO). All IITs have sports grounds for basketball, cricket, football (soccer), hockey, volleyball, lawn tennis, badminton, athletics and swimming pools for aquatic events. Normally hostels also have their sports grounds.

In addition, an Inter IIT Sports Meet is organized each year in which all the 23 IITs' students are invited to contest for the General Championship Trophy in 13 different sports. Except for the Inter IIT Cultural Meet and Tech Meet, all of them normally take place on different dates during the month of December every year.

All the IIT's hold annual technical festivals, normally lasting three or four days. The technical fests are Shaastra (IIT Madras), Advitiya (IIT Ropar), Kshitij (IIT Kharagpur), Techfest (IIT Bombay), Technex (IIT-BHU Varanasi), Cognizance (IIT Roorkee), Concetto (IIT-ISM Dhanbad), Tirutsava (IIT Tirupati), Nvision (IIT Hyderabad), Meraz (IIT Bhilai), Amalthea, (IIT Gandhinagar), Techkriti (IIT Kanpur), Tryst (IIT Delhi), Techniche (IIT Guwahati), Wissenaire (IIT Bhubaneswar), Technunctus (IIT Jammu), Exodia (IIT Mandi), Fluxus (IIT Indore), Celesta (IIT Patna) and IGNUS[broken anchor] (IIT Jodhpur) Petrichor(IIT Palakkad). Most of these events take place in January or March. Techfest (IIT Bombay) also is one of the most sought after and biggest technical festivals in Asia regarding participant strength and money amount in it. It has been accorded patronage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for creating a platform for students to provide a demonstration of their talent in the arena of science and technology. Shaastra is the world's first student-managed event to have adopted a formal Quality Management System and has been ISO 9001:2000 certified.[81] Kshitij is a techno-management festival because of its stressing focus both on technology and management, and the largest among them in terms of sponsorship money.

Annual Cultural Festivals : The IITs also host annual cultural festivals. These are three or four-day events. These include Thomso (IIT Roorkee), Kashiyatra (IIT BHU Varanasi), Alcheringa (IIT Guwahati), Exodia (IIT Mandi), Saarang and Paradox, two of the leading annual fests of IIT Madras BTech and BS degree students, Spring Fest (IIT Kharagpur, also termed as SF), Rendezvous (IIT Delhi), Meraz (IIT Bhilai), Tirutsava (IIT Tirupati), Srijan, which earlier was named Saturnalia, of IIT Dhanbad, and finally, Tarang known as culfest (previously Rave), also Anwesha of IIT Patna, SPANDAN of IIT Jodhpur, Renao of IIT Jammu, Petrichor of IIT Palakkad, Blithchron of IIT Gandhinagar, ELAN of IIT Hyderabad, Alma Fiesta of IIT Bhubaneswar, Mood Indigo, IIT Bombay, also known as Mood-I, Antaragni of IIT Kanpur, and finally, Zeitgeist, IIT Ropar.
