IBPS Brief History

With the nationalization of Indian banks in 1969, Indian banks wanted to extend their branch network across the country in order to be more accessible to their clients. This needed additional personnel, yet measures such as advertising were ineffective. As a result, the banks urged the National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM) to create a selection testing method that would allow them to recruit qualified personnel. As a result, a tiny organization known as People Selection Services (PSS) was formed to handle initiatives of this nature. PSS was renamed IBPS a few years later, in 1984.

IBPS is now an autonomous agency that primarily conducts competitive tests for recruitment to clerical and officer positions in the banking sector. Before, candidates had to take numerous tests for each bank's vacancy. IBPS now runs four main recruiting procedures, namely CRP PO/MT, CRP RRBs, CRP Clerical, and CRP Specialist Officers, through which several tests for banking industry employment are held each year.
