How is GATE score calculated?

The GATE Score is determined using the candidates' actual marks received for all papers with a single session. The GATE score is computed using normalized marks for papers in multi-session exams..The highest marks and qualifying marks for each subject determine the GATE scores in full. Furthermore, it might completely change from year to year. It should be noted that different scores from different years can be obtained for the same marks.

Unlike GATE Marks, which are calculated using a 100-point scale, GATE Score is based on a 1000-point scale. Candidates for the GATE should be aware that the terms "GATE Marks" and "GATE Scores" used here are completely unrelated. Read the article to learn more about how GATE scores are determined, the factors taken into account, the normalization process, and the distinction between GATE Marks, Ranks, and Score Analysis.

GATE marks vs rank vs score:

Students who intend to take the upcoming GATE exam should be familiar with the GATE marks vs rank vs score analysis criteria in order to understand what their GATE scores would entail. Students generally struggle with the scores and the question of how scales and scores are determined based on marks.

GATE Marks:

The weighting and quantity of questions in the exam are used to determine GATE marks. The exam consists of 65 questions in total, including multiple-choice, multiple-select, and questions requiring numerical responses. There are 100 total points available. Multiple choice questions receive negative marking. GATE marks are the actual or raw scores that a candidate receives in the test based on how well they perform.

GATE Score:

The primary distinction between GATE marks and scores is that the former are based on a scale of 100, while the latter are based on a scale of 1000. The GATE score is determined by taking into account both actual and adjusted scores. The difficulty of a single session's and multiple sessions' number of papers affects GATE Score as well. By taking into consideration the presumption that "in all multi-session GATE papers, the distribution of abilities of candidates is the same throughout all the sessions," the authorities are able to calculate an objective GATE score.

IIT, IISc, and NIT, as well as other reputable institutions, accept and utilise GATE scores frequently for employment purposes.

GATE Rank

The candidate's GATE score is used to determine their GATE rank. All qualified applicants are awarded an all-India ranking, which establishes their chances of admission to postgraduate programmes at IIT, IISc, and NIT. A good GATE rank is a relative concept that is determined by the candidate's goals.

Therefore, the below pointers and table listed below will help give the students an insight to clear their base on the difference between marks, rank and score:

  • The discipline and cut off will determine the GATE rank needed to be admitted to the desired college.
  • For M.Tech admission to IITs, a GATE score of under 200 is considered good, whereas a GATE score of between 350 and 800 is considered good for admission to NITs.
  • A few new IITs and IIITs will accept applications for M.Tech admission from candidates with scores between 600 and 800.
  • The analysis of expected GATE 2023 rank vs. marks is presented in the table below. Candidates can look at this table to get a better idea of where they should expect to place based on their scores.

Normalized Score Calculation

The method of normalising GATE marks has been developed by the authorities in order to be fair to all candidates. The following parts have mentioned the formula and its justification.

Using the formula, the resulting raw marks are changed to normalised marks.

Based on the premise that "in all multi-session GATE papers, the distribution of skills of candidates is the same throughout all the sessions," GATE normalisation is carried out.

Only the actual GATE Marks are used to calculate GATE Score for single session papers. While for papers from several sessions, the GATE 2023 Score Calculation uses both the actual/raw marks and the normalised scores.

GATE Qualifiying Marks

The GATE qualifying marks (out of 100) vary depending on the category. The tabular format for the same is provided below. The GATE qualifying marks (out of 100) vary depending on the category. The tabular format for the same is provided below.

  • After each round of CCMT counselling, the participating IITs release their own cut off lists, whereas NITs release their cut off in the form of the opening and closing rank.
  • It should be noted, nevertheless, that some of these institutes admit students depending on their GATE scores. The candidates must research the preferred institute and learn about its hiring practises.
  • GATE Cutoff 2023 will be made public by IIT Kharagpur following the exam's end. The following variables will affect the cutoff.
  • Total number of canidates that took the exam
  • The degree of difficulty for GATE 2023
  • total amount of seats available
  • Candidate classification for admission
