What is BTech IT? – Course Overview

BTech or Bachelors of Technology is a 4-year undergraduate engineering course with various specializations like Mechanical, Computer Science, Civil and Electrical. This program provides deep theoretical knowledge and practical experience to students, making them familiar with the study, application and management of computer systems, network, algorithms and core engineering principles. Students are provided with detailed knowledge of how to store, process, and share electronic data to drive business growth. Even though the two involve the study of computer science and technology, the focus of the two differ in terms of application.

B.Tech IT Course Details

Course Duration & Structure -

The B.Tech IT course is a 4-year undergraduate program divided into 8 semesters. A typical B.Tech IT course requires a student to earn 160 credits across exams, lab practicals and internships. B.Tech IT programs usually have a variety of core subjects and electives which can be chosen by the students as per their desire of specialization. The theory helps them understand the concepts while the lab work and internships give them an opportunity to showcase their skills and knowledge. During the course of the undergraduate program, students also attend workshops and training seminars to better understand the practical applications of their studies.

B.Tech IT focuses on the practical applications of Computer networks and algorithms in business settings. Therefore, the course focuses on providing students with sufficient hands-on experience of work via lab work:

  • Programming Labs: Gaining hands-on experience with programming languages and tools to be used in particular scenarios.
  • Hardware and Networking Labs: Learning about computer hardware and networking equipment.
  • Data Science and AI Labs: Working with data and AI tools.

B.Tech IT Eligibility Criteria

Academic Requirements -

To be eligible for the B.Tech IT course, a student needs to fulfill the following criteria:

  • Pass 10+2 examinations in science stream with a minimum of 55% marks from a recognized board/institution.
  • The students should have studied physics, chemistry and maths as core subjects in their 10+2.
  • Most colleges often consider students based on their scores in national or university-level entrance exams.
  • For students opting for a 3-year engineering diploma after class 10th, they can apply for a lateral entry directly into 2nd year of B.Tech.

B.Tech IT Entrance Exams for Admission (JEE, WBJEE, COMEDK, etc.) -

The most common criteria for getting admission in B.Tech IT is through entrance exams. Several private universities conduct their own entrance exams to shortlist applicants. The following are the key entrance exams for admission in B.Tech IT:

  1. JEE (Joint Entrance Exam): Conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA) in two levels i.e. Mains and Advanced, this national-level entrance exam is one of the most competitive and rigorous examinations for getting admission into IIITs, NITs and other institutions. Those who qualify in JEE Mains can further appear in JEE Advanced for getting into IITs.
  2. CUET UG: A national-level exam conducted by NTA for admission to various Central Universities.
  3. COMEDK UGETA national-level exam conducted by the Consortium of Medical, Engineering, and Dental Colleges of Karnataka for admission to private engineering colleges in Karnataka.

Except for these, there are several state and university level exams for admission in B.Tech IT courses:

  1. EAMCET: Entrance exam for securing admission to undergraduate programs in engineering, agriculture, and pharmacy (and sometimes medicine) in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
  2. WBJEEA state-level exam conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board for admission to engineering and other professional courses in West Bengal.
  3. VITEEEConducted by Vellore Institute of Technology for admission to its various undergraduate programs.
  4. NPAT: A selection exam for various courses at NMIMS.
  5. KIITEE: Conducted by KIIT University for admission to its various undergraduate programs.

B.Tech IT Direct Admission Without Entrance Exam

Multiple colleges offering B.Tech IT have an admission criteria where no exams are necessary. Such colleges offer admission to students based on their scores in 10+2/Diploma exams and personal interview rounds.

Students aiming to get admission in B.Tech IT should meet the academic requirement as mentioned above. Different colleges may have different eligibility criteria. Therefore, students

Steps to Apply for Admission -

Here are the steps to follow for students taking admission into B.Tech. programmes in India:

  1. Fill out the application form on the college websites.
  2. Based on the cut-off percentage, students will be invited for a personal interview round

Appear for the relevant entrance exams to get shortlisted for the interview round.

  1. For direct admissions, students who clear the PI round get provisional admission into the college.

OR

For entrance exam candidates, people who clear the cut-off and PI rounds get allotted to certain colleges based on merit on a provisional basis
